Francesco Totti Confirms Offers from Top European Leagues at Age 48

It sounds unbelievable, but Francesco Totti, the 2006 World Cup winner, has confirmed that he received offers to play for clubs in major European leagues despite being 48 years old. Although he retired back in 2017, several teams reached out to him as recently as October 2024.

Turning Down Genoa and Como

Totti revealed in his autobiography Oltre (quoted by Corriere della Sera) that both Genoa and Como expressed serious interest in signing him. The former Roma legend spoke directly with club officials. Even though he started training again and improved his diet—cutting out bread and sweets—he ultimately declined the offers.

He shared a humorous observation about the age differences involved: Genoa's coach was Alberto Gilardino, also a 2006 World Cup champion, aged 42, while Cesc Fàbregas, then at Como, was 37. That meant Totti would have been six years older than Gilardino and eleven years older than Fàbregas, who was on the bench advising him.

Training and Doubts

Totti said his body handled the training well aside from usual aches expected near 50. He pushed himself seriously but faced mental struggles. At times, his mind encouraged a return, while his heart resisted. Then those feelings flipped back and forth. Ultimately, his love for Roma influenced his decision more than age.

"Can you even play for a team other than Roma?" Totti questioned himself. "Roma was the deciding factor. Not the problem—it never will be. Sporting betrayal knows no age, whether you are 18 or 48."

The offers were genuine and not fairy tales, as Totti emphasized. Still, loyalty to his old club stood firm. The possibility of a comeback at 48 remains one of football’s most surprising stories.
