Dominik Szoboszlai Signs New Five-Year Contract with Liverpool

Dominik Szoboszlai has nailed his colours to the Liverpool mast, signing a new five-year contract that ties him to Anfield until 2031 and underlines his status as the club’s new standard-bearer.

The Hungary captain arrived from RB Leipzig for £60m in 2023. One season later, he is no longer just a big-money signing; he is the face of Liverpool’s next era. Thirteen goals, 12 assists and a relentless presence in midfield made him the standout performer in a campaign of transition.

“I’m never happy,” Szoboszlai said, summing up the drive that has quickly endeared him to the Kop. “I want to set the example. I want to be an example also for everyone, as much as I can.”

It is not empty rhetoric. He has played like it from the first whistle of his Liverpool career.

When he joined, he spoke about winning everything. A year on, nothing has softened that ambition.

“When I signed, I said I want to win everything. That didn’t change for a little moment either. It stayed the same. I want to win everything that is possible in this country, also let’s say the Champions League. I’m ready to go for it.”

The new deal ends months of speculation over his future, with negotiations between his camp and sporting director Richard Hughes finally reaching agreement in recent weeks. Talks accelerated as Liverpool mapped out their long-term core, and both sides were convinced this was the moment to lock in a player they believe is still some distance from his peak.

At 25, Szoboszlai is already the leader of his national team. At Liverpool, the armband might not be far away either. With Andy Robertson leaving Anfield this summer and the vice-captaincy vacant, Szoboszlai’s renewed commitment and growing influence make him a powerful contender for the role.

Inside the dressing room, his reputation is already sky-high. Back in February, Mohamed Salah, who has since left the club, described him as “one of the best players in the world” — a line that carried weight from a player who has shared a pitch with the elite for a decade.

This contract, then, is about more than security. It is a statement of intent from both sides. Liverpool are building around a midfielder who wants responsibility, wants trophies, and is unafraid to say so out loud.

Szoboszlai has made his move. Now the question is whether Liverpool can match the scale of his ambition.
