Dominik Szoboszlai Signs New Contract with Liverpool
Dominik Szoboszlai leant back in his chair, smiled, and called it “maybe my biggest day”. For Liverpool, it felt like one of their most important bits of business of the summer.
The Hungary captain has signed a new five-year contract at Anfield, tying him to the club until the age of 30 and underlining his intention not just to stay, but to lead a new era – one he hopes will end with him lifting the Champions League in red.
A statement deal for club and player
Szoboszlai had entered the final two years of his previous deal and talks had been running quietly in the background for months. Inside the club there was little real anxiety; the feeling was always that he wanted to remain on Merseyside. Then, in recent weeks, negotiations accelerated and Liverpool moved decisively to lock down one of their centrepieces.
They have done so for good reason. Signed from RB Leipzig for £60m in 2023, Szoboszlai quickly grew into a driving force in Jürgen Klopp’s final seasons and then in the Premier League title-winning campaign of 2024-25. Last season he delivered 13 goals and 12 assists, numbers that only tell part of the story of a midfielder who roamed across positions and stitched Liverpool’s attacking play together.
The new contract is Liverpool’s way of putting that influence in ink.
“Never enough” mentality
Szoboszlai’s reaction captured why the club view him as a pillar of the dressing room as much as the team sheet.
"It's maybe my biggest day," he told the club’s website. "There are a couple in front of it – probably when I signed for Liverpool the first one and when I got my baby, of course. But in my football career, I can say this is in the top three. Very happy. [I] can't wait to go again and again and again. I'm just happy to be here."
The numbers from last season would satisfy most midfielders. Szoboszlai’s own standards run higher.
"There's always more to come. I'm never happy," he said. "I'm happy with myself but I think I can do even better. I think that's why I'm sitting here, because that pushed me since I was a kid: that it was never enough. And I'm thinking the same now."
That relentless edge has already made him a reference point for younger players. He talks like someone who understands the weight of the shirt and wants to carry it, not just wear it.
"I want to set the example. I want to be an example also for everyone, as much as I can," he added. "When I signed, I said I want to win everything. That didn't change for a little moment either. It stayed the same: I want to win everything that is possible in this country, also let's say the Champions League. I'm ready to go for it."
Eyes on Europe
Domestic success has already come. Szoboszlai played a key role as Liverpool reclaimed the Premier League in 2024-25, his blend of energy, creativity and aggression perfectly suited to a side that suffocates opponents and punishes any lapse.
But his new contract is framed around something bigger. He wants Europe.
Liverpool’s modern history is measured in European nights and Champions League finals. For Szoboszlai, committing his peak years to Anfield is about inserting himself into that lineage, about swapping ambition for medals on the biggest stage.
The club have made their move. Their No 8 has made his. The next five years will decide whether this deal becomes just another renewal, or the foundation stone of Liverpool’s next great Champions League push.
