Didier Deschamps Criticizes Referee After France's World Cup Semi-Final Loss to Spain
After France's 2-0 loss to Spain in the 2026 World Cup semi-final at AT&T Stadium, Didier Deschamps did not hold back his frustration regarding referee Ivan Barton's decisions. The pivotal moment arrived in the 22nd minute when Mikel Oyarzabal scored a penalty following a foul call against Lucas Digne on Lamine Yamal. Deschamps suggested the ball struck Yamal's arm before contact happened and openly wondered if Barton was fit to officiate such a crucial match.
If I say anything, I'll look like a sore loser because we lost, but I ask you: is the referee up to the task of officiating a semi-final? There’s the penalty, but that’s not all; it adds to everything else. I have nothing against the referee tonight, but ask yourselves the question.
France Struggles Beyond Refereeing Issues
The French side appeared outplayed for much of the match. Spain doubled their lead in the 58th minute thanks to Pedro Porro, leaving France's attack, led by Kylian Mbappe and Michael Olise, ineffective. France barely managed a close-range shot until late in the game, highlighting their difficulties.
Deschamps admitted the team was below its usual technical standard, noting Spain's strong defense and smart interception of passes made creating chances tough. He said, "Compared with them, in our passing combinations and sequences, they’re also excellent at reading the game and intercepting passes. We couldn’t find solutions. I don’t want to say our attacking and technical expression simply disappeared on its own. That’s normally one of our strengths."
He added, "There was also a lot of merit on the opponent’s side. I’m not going to condemn everything we did or erase what we’ve accomplished. But I’ll repeat it: in a match like this, against a team like Spain, you have to be at your absolute maximum. France wasn’t at that level tonight."
Mbappe Critiques Tactical Execution
While Deschamps focused on officiating and errors, team captain Kylian Mbappe criticized the tactical approach. He pointed out that Spain's midfield, especially Fabian Ruiz and Rodri, controlled the game's tempo too easily. Mbappe suggested France’s pressing was poorly coordinated and should have been more aggressive.
We were three against two in midfield and against Spain, that’s hard. Fabian and Rodri had plenty of time to play. There was a lack of communication on the press. I think we should have done man-to-man press and forced them to run with us. We didn’t play the game we wanted, technically, tactically. When you don’t do what you have to do in a World Cup semi-final, you don’t win.
An End to Deschamps’ Era
This loss brings a quiet end to Deschamps's 14-year leadership of the French national team. Despite the setback, his record remains impressive: four straight World Cup quarter-finals or better, including winning in 2018 and reaching the final in 2022. He acknowledged the team lost control to a top-tier opponent and some players faced their first World Cup semi-final pressure.
We didn’t control things well enough. The opponent forced us into mistakes. But this was a World Cup semifinal. For two of our players, it was their first one. That doesn’t take away anything from what we did well before this. I don’t want to diminish everything that had been accomplished.
With reports suggesting Zinedine Zidane could take over after the tournament, France now looks ahead to the third-place playoff in Miami.
