Chelsea Pursue Wijnaldum to Fill Midfield Gap
Chelsea are scrambling to plug the Enzo Fernandez-shaped hole in their midfield – and Georginio Wijnaldum has emerged as a surprise solution.
The club allowed Fernandez to leave for Manchester City on deadline day in a seismic £125million deal, only to see their planned replacement fall through when talks over Monaco’s Lamine Camara went nowhere. The window slammed shut. The gap in Xabi Alonso’s midfield did not.
So Chelsea have turned to the one market still open to them: free agents. That search has led them to a familiar Premier League face.
Wijnaldum back on the radar
According to Foot Mercato, Chelsea have made contact with Wijnaldum, now 35, as they explore handing the Dutchman a route back into English football. The former Liverpool and Newcastle midfielder has been without a club since leaving Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq in the summer.
For Alonso, the appeal is obvious. Wijnaldum knows the league, knows the tempo, and has won it. He lifted the Premier League title with Liverpool in 2020 and built a reputation as one of the engine-room pillars in Jurgen Klopp’s side.
Across his spells at Newcastle and Liverpool, Wijnaldum racked up 277 appearances in England, chipping in with crucial goals and stitching together a midfield that powered Liverpool’s rise. His most recent season at Al-Ettifaq showed there is still life in his legs: 17 goals in 34 games, even if that output did not earn him a new deal in Saudi Arabia.
Now Chelsea are considering whether that experience can steady them through a turbulent start to a new era.
Alonso’s midfield puzzle
Alonso has wasted no time stamping his ideas on the team. So far this season, Romeo Lavia has started both games in the middle, with Reece James and Cole Palmer also used alongside him. Fernandez, amid the noise around his future, was left out before his move to City was completed.
Chelsea still have Moises Caicedo, the £115m signing who was meant to be one of the cornerstones of their midfield rebuild. But even that security blanket slipped on Sunday, when the Ecuadorian limped off, raising fresh concerns over depth and balance in the centre of the pitch.
The new manager has tried to project calm. Speaking after the wild 4-3 win over Brighton, Alonso kept his cards close to his chest when asked about Fernandez and the wider transfer picture.
“We will see. We want the best for team. If anything that will happen or develop, we are not sure. We are preparing for all the scenarios, but I know that from Wednesday, we have a team to challenge and I want to win,” he said.
A team to challenge, yes. But is it a midfield built to last across a season?
A short-term fix with big-club pedigree
That is where Wijnaldum comes in. He would not arrive as a long-term cornerstone, but as an interim solution, a steadying presence while Alonso reshapes the squad and waits on injuries and future windows.
At 35, he would bring miles of experience to one of the Premier League’s youngest squads. He has navigated title races, Champions League nights, and the relentless rhythm of English football. Chelsea, suddenly light in the very area that dictates control and composure, are now weighing up whether that know-how is worth a calculated gamble.
The free-agent market rarely offers perfection. It can, though, offer exactly what a club needs in the moment.
Chelsea must now decide if Wijnaldum is that moment player.
