Rising Stars to Watch in the 2026-27 Champions League: Diomande, Bouaddi, Dowman and More

The 2026-27 Champions League kicks off with 36 teams packed with promising stars ready to compete on Europe's grandest stage. While established names will grab headlines, a fresh group of young talents under 22 are set to shine and begin their European legacies.

Yan Diomande (Real Madrid)

The 19-year-old winger Yan Diomande has joined Real Madrid after a record €120m move from RB Leipzig. After earning the Bundesliga Rookie of the Season award with 12 goals in 2025-26, Diomande brings skill and flair to Jose Mourinho's squad. Though he has only played 83 minutes this La Liga season across four substitute appearances, Mourinho urges patience as Diomande competes for a spot against Vinicius Junior, Brahim Diaz, and Arda Guler. The Ivory Coast star carries confidence to perform at the highest level as Madrid chase a 16th Champions League title.

Ayyoub Bouaddi (Manchester City)

Manchester City strengthened their midfield with 18-year-old Ayyoub Bouaddi, acquired from Lille for around €85.6m, making him the Premier League's most expensive teenager. Bouaddi impressed at the 2026 World Cup with Morocco, showcasing composure, vision, and passing from deep midfield. Coach Enzo Maresca plans to ease Bouaddi into the team but expects him to become a key player alongside newcomers Enzo Fernandez and Elliot Anderson. Despite his young age, Bouaddi has already made 96 senior appearances, including 25 in European competitions.

Max Dowman (Arsenal)

Sixteen-year-old Max Dowman might break out this season under Mikel Arteta. Last year, Dowman became the youngest-ever Champions League player at 15 years and 308 days, breaking Youssoufa Moukoko's record. After excelling at youth level with five goals in six UEFA Youth League games, Dowman aims for more first-team action in a strong Arsenal squad tipped as UCL contenders. Primarily a right-winger who can also play centrally, he faces competition from Bukayo Saka and Noni Madueke but is expected to see increased playing time.

Ibrahim Mbaye (Aston Villa)

Aston Villa signed 18-year-old Ibrahim Mbaye for €47m from Paris Saint-Germain, where he was part of last season's Champions League-winning squad. Mbaye, who scored for Senegal at the 2026 World Cup, offers pace, dribbling skills, goal threat, and relentless pressing fitting Unai Emery's tactics. If fully fit, Mbaye could become a vital attacker alongside fellow new signing Nicolas Jackson for Villa.

Nico Paz (Como)

Nico Paz stands out as the creative force in Cesc Fabregas's ambitious Como side preparing for their debut Champions League season after finishing fourth in Serie A. The 21-year-old playmaker scored 13 goals and provided eight assists in 40 matches during 2025-26 and recently completed a permanent €60m transfer from Real Madrid. Compared by some to inherit Lionel Messi's No.10 role for Argentina, Paz excels between the lines and contributes defensively, offering box-to-box capabilities. His performances will be key if Como want to cause surprises this campaign.
