2026-27 Champions League Format Breakdown: League Phase and Knockout Stage Details
The UEFA Champions League stands as Europe's premier club football competition, attracting top teams from across the continent each year. The trophy itself remains one of the most sought-after prizes in club football globally.
Since the major format revision introduced in the 2024/25 season, the tournament now follows a fresh structure that some fans might still be getting familiar with. This guide will walk you through the revamped league phase and knockout rounds for the 2026-27 campaign.
Key Changes in the Competition Structure
Before 2024/25, 32 teams entered a group stage split into eight groups of four teams each. Now, the initial phase is replaced by a single league phase with 36 teams competing together in one table.
Each club faces eight opponents—playing four matches at home and four away. Following this, 24 teams progress to the knockout stages. Unlike before, the top eight teams in the league table skip the first knockout round and go straight to the Round of 16.
Teams ranked 9th through 16th are seeded for the knockout playoff round, where they face off against clubs placed 17th to 24th. The lowest 12 clubs in the standings exit the competition entirely, with no fallback into the Europa or Conference Leagues.
Number of Teams and Qualification
The tournament now features 36 teams, up from 32. Two extra places were granted to the nations with the best UEFA coefficient rankings—namely England and Spain, based on recent results.
The Swiss Model Explained
This new league phase resembles what is called the "Swiss model," a system where teams do not all play each other but face a set number of different opponents, determined by a draw. UEFA adopted this to allow clubs to encounter a broader range of opponents earlier in the competition.
How the League Phase Draw Operates
During the draw, teams are divided into four pots based on UEFA club coefficients, including last season's champions, PSG, who are automatically in Pot 1.
Each team plays against two opponents from each pot, totaling eight matches. Points follow the standard format: three for a win, one for a draw.
- Pot 1: PSG (France), Bayern Munich (Germany), Arsenal (England), Real Madrid (Spain), Inter Milan (Italy), Manchester City (England), Barcelona (Spain), Liverpool (England), Borussia Dortmund (Germany)
- Pot 2: Atletico Madrid (Spain), Aston Villa (England), AS Roma (Italy), Porto (Portugal), Club Brugge (Belgium), Sporting CP (Portugal), Real Betis (Spain), PSV Eindhoven (Netherlands), Manchester United (England)
- Pot 3: Napoli (Italy), Lille (France), Shakhtar Donetsk (Ukraine), Bodo/Glimt (Norway), Feyenoord (Netherlands), RB Leipzig (Germany), Galatasaray (Turkey), Villarreal (Spain), Slavia Prague (Czechia)
- Pot 4: Stuttgart (Germany), Lens (France), LASK (Austria), Sabah (Azerbaijan), Como (Italy), TBD, TBD, TBD, TBD
No More Drops to Europa League
Unlike previous years, clubs finishing in the bottom 12 spots during the league phase are eliminated outright. They no longer get the chance to continue their European campaign by moving into the Europa League.
Knockout Phase Setup
The knockout rounds have only slight changes despite the bigger league phase. The main addition is the knockout playoff round involving 16 clubs ranked 9th to 24th.
Those top eight teams from the league phase bypass this playoff, going directly into the Round of 16.
The knockout playoff draw pairs seeded teams (9-16) with unseeded ones (17-24) and also lays out much of the bracket for the rest of the competition. Then, the Round of 16 draw determines which winners from the playoff round face the top eight finishers.
