Bordeaux Relegated to Sixth Tier After Court Ruling

The hammer has come down on one of French football’s great names. The Paris Administrative Court has upheld the sanction handed out by the French Football Federation (FFF) to Girondins de Bordeaux, confirming the club’s exclusion from national competitions and its relegation to Régional 1, the sixth level of the pyramid.

For a club with European nights, titles and legends in its history, the verdict is brutal. Régional 1 means local grounds, amateur status, and a step far beyond the usual notion of “relegation”.

Rescue plan rejected, sanction stands

This ruling closes a chapter that began with bankruptcy proceedings in 2024 and the loss of Bordeaux’s professional status. There was a late attempt to save the institution. Owner Gérard López handed over his shares to Sparta Capital for a symbolic one euro, and the investment firm arrived with a plan: inject 10.6 million euros to clear the debts and keep the club alive in the national structure.

It was not enough. The court sided with the FFF and its disciplinary decision, confirming that the sporting punishment would hold despite the proposed financial lifeline.

A giant forced into amateur football

The consequence is stark. Bordeaux, a historic presence in Ligue 1 and on the European stage, must now restart from amateur football in Régional 1. The club will be completely outside the professional divisions for the 2026-2027 season.

What follows is not just a rebuild. It is a reinvention. From national arenas to regional pitches, Girondins de Bordeaux now face the hardest question in their modern history: how do you climb back from the sixth tier without losing what made you a giant in the first place?
