Barcelona Target Dumfries Amid Kounde Uncertainty

The season is barely over, but Barcelona are already deep in summer mode. The hunt for a new centre-forward tops the agenda, yet behind that headline search, another storyline is quietly gathering pace on the right side of defence.

Jules Kounde’s performances at right-back have never fully silenced the doubts. He wants to be a centre-back, the club sees him as a movable asset, and the position remains a puzzle. Into that uncertainty steps a familiar name: Denzel Dumfries.

Dumfries back on Barça’s radar

According to FC Inter News, relayed by SPORT, the Inter Milan defender has once again surfaced as a serious option for Barcelona. Dumfries looks increasingly likely to leave San Siro on a permanent deal this summer, and his camp has already started shopping him to Europe’s elite.

The Netherlands international is listening.

His new representatives have held talks with both Liverpool and Barcelona, two clubs that tracked him in previous windows. Ali Barat, now handling Dumfries’ interests, met Deco only a few days ago to outline the player’s situation and test the waters at Barça.

For now, the Catalan club are not rushing. Any move is on standby while they wait to see who leaves and what kind of financial space opens up.

Dumfries knows the score. A transfer to Barcelona hinges heavily on what happens with Kounde.

Kounde at the heart of the domino

Inside the club, there is a clear willingness to listen to offers for the French defender. His status is no longer untouchable, and his case is seen as one that could trigger significant movement across the back line in the coming weeks.

If a major bid arrives and Kounde goes, the right-back picture changes overnight. If he stays, Dumfries becomes far harder to justify, both sportingly and financially.

That is the delicate equation Deco and Hansi Flick are working through as they sketch out next season’s defence.

A €25 million window of opportunity

Dumfries’ contract adds another twist. The Inter full-back has a €25 million release clause that becomes active in July, but only for a month. Any club wanting to land him at that price must move quickly and close a deal inside that narrow window.

Barcelona know this timing well. Last summer, Jorge Mendes, then representing Dumfries, pushed hard to bring him to the Camp Nou. The move never materialised because of the club’s salary restrictions, not because of a lack of interest.

The admiration has not faded. The finances remain tight.

Cancelo first, then the rest

Right now, Barcelona’s priority on the flanks is clear: secure João Cancelo from Al Hilal. The club are working to reach an agreement that would keep the Portuguese full-back, whose versatility on both sides of the defence has made him a key piece in their planning.

Only once that deal is defined will Barça fully turn to the rest of the defensive puzzle. Outgoings will shape everything. Contracts, offers, and the market will decide how bold they can be.

Within that framework, Dumfries is more than a name on a long list. Deco and Flick both value his profile: powerful, direct, and physically imposing in wide areas, with the kind of athleticism Barcelona’s back line has often lacked in recent years.

His wages, crucially, are seen as manageable within the club’s current structure.

But the door only opens if an ambitious clear-out goes ahead. Without meaningful sales, Dumfries remains an opportunity on paper, not on the pitch.

The question now is simple: will Barcelona pull the trigger on a defensive reshuffle big enough to bring a player like Dumfries through the Camp Nou tunnel, or will another club seize a rare €25 million chance while the Catalans hesitate?
