Aurelien Tchouameni's Future: Liverpool and Man Utd Eye Transfer

Aurelien Tchouameni walked into Real Madrid as the future of their midfield. Two years on, he’s being told there are no guarantees he’s part of the long-term plan.

That single message has jolted Europe’s elite into life.

Liverpool and Manchester United, long-time admirers of the France international, have been alerted to a growing sense inside the Bernabeu that Tchouameni could be sacrificed this summer. Lines of communication between the player’s camp and both Premier League giants have stayed open all summer; now they’re suddenly very relevant.

Madrid, reshaped in Jose Mourinho’s image, are listening. And crucially, they have a price.

Mourinho’s rebuild puts stars on edge

Mourinho has arrived at the Santiago Bernabeu with a brief to rip up and rebuild. No area is ring-fenced, not even a midfield many clubs would happily build around.

The defensive line has already been reinforced with Ibrahima Konate, Denzel Dumfries and Marc Cucurella. Bernardo Silva has been prised from Manchester City to inject guile and goals between the lines. This is not tinkering. It’s surgery.

And Madrid are not done.

  • Enzo Fernandez remains a priority target.
  • Rodri is still admired in the corridors of power.
  • West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes is being tracked closely.
  • There is also internal talk of going again for Bayern Munich’s Michael Olise, a move that would demand another huge financial outlay, even if not at world-record levels.

Something has to give. Inside the club, the conversation keeps circling back to the same name: Tchouameni.

From altercation to uncertainty

The Frenchman’s future first wobbled earlier this year when his training-ground clash with Federico Valverde spilled into the public domain. At the time, Madrid closed ranks. Tchouameni, they insisted, remained central to their plans. No sale. No debate.

That stance has softened.

With Mourinho now driving a major reconstruction, Madrid have informed Tchouameni that his place in the new order is no longer guaranteed. He, along with fellow French international Eduardo Camavinga, is understood to be vulnerable if the club land further midfield signings.

The message has travelled quickly across the Channel. Liverpool and Manchester United have been fully briefed on the shifting landscape and are poised to move if Madrid give the green light.

Liverpool’s long pursuit

Liverpool know this player inside out. They pushed hard to sign him from Monaco in 2022, only to lose out to Madrid. The admiration never faded.

At Anfield, concerns linger over the long-term futures of several midfielders. The recruitment team has scouted Premier League options such as Adam Wharton and Alex Scott, but Tchouameni sits in a different bracket entirely: a plug-and-play upgrade, a midfielder who walks into their starting XI and raises the ceiling immediately.

For Liverpool, this is the calibre of opportunity that doesn’t come around often. A 26-year-old, already proven at the highest level, potentially available at a defined price.

United see a midfield cornerstone

Across at Old Trafford, the view is similar.

United’s hierarchy have tracked Tchouameni for years and regard him as one of the elite holding midfielders in world football. Internally, he is seen as a player who could transform the balance and authority of their midfield, a cornerstone rather than a complementary piece.

United have already backed away from deals for Sandro Tonali and Elliot Anderson due to spiralling valuations. They have become wary of being dragged into auctions for players whose price bears little resemblance to their impact.

Tchouameni is different in their eyes. His pedigree, his age profile, his Champions League experience – all of it makes the fee far easier to justify.

Arsenal and Chelsea are also monitoring the situation, but at this stage Liverpool and United are viewed as the best positioned if Madrid formally open the door.

Madrid name their price

Inside the Bernabeu, there is a clear understanding: to fund Mourinho’s ambitious rebuild, at least one major sale is required. Tchouameni, with two years left on his contract and a strong market reputation, is seen as one of the club’s most valuable saleable assets.

The figure being discussed in Spain is around €100m (£87m, $115m).

Madrid believe that pitching the price much higher risks scaring off even the richest suitors at a time when top clubs are increasingly wary of inflated fees. Set it there, though, and they expect serious conversations.

Liverpool have been reluctant to overpay for domestic targets. United have already walked away from deals when valuations soared. Yet both clubs are understood to view Tchouameni as an exception – a rare case where the cost and the quality feel aligned.

So the stage is set.

Mourinho’s midfield rebuild is gathering pace. Madrid are open to reshaping their squad and know they may need to sacrifice a big name to push through more marquee signings. Tchouameni, once the symbol of the next generation at the Bernabeu, now stands at a crossroads.

Does he stay and fight for a place in a crowded, remade Madrid midfield? Or does he seize the chance to become the heartbeat of Liverpool or Manchester United at the peak of his career?
