Arsenal Faces Key Decision on Martin Zubimendi Amid Real Madrid Interest
Arsenal are staring at one of the defining calls of their summer – and it revolves around Martin Zubimendi.
Real Madrid have come back for the Spanish international, this time with intent, and the noise around north London is getting harder to ignore.
Mourinho pushes, Madrid circle
TEAMtalk report that Jose Mourinho has given full approval to a move for the 27-year-old, identifying the Arsenal midfielder as the ideal anchor to tighten his midfield. Madrid have already made initial contact over what would be a blockbuster deal, and the early signs from the player’s camp are clear enough: Zubimendi is understood to be very interested in a return to Spain with Los Blancos.
Madrid sense an opening. They believe the timing is perfect to tempt him back home, especially after missing out on Rodri and with uncertainty over Eduardo Camavinga’s future at the Santiago Bernabeu. Mourinho wants more authority and control in the middle of the pitch; Zubimendi fits that brief.
Arsenal’s dilemma
Arsenal are not actively trying to move him on. This is not a fire sale, nor a squad clear-out. But the club are thought to be willing to listen if a serious proposal lands on the table.
That is where the picture blurs.
According to The Sun, Mikel Arteta is desperate to keep Zubimendi and has no intention of sanctioning a sale unless a truly exceptional offer arrives. Arteta’s stance is firm: only something extraordinary would force a rethink. The complication comes if the player himself pushes hard for a lucrative switch to Madrid. At that point, the decision becomes far more uncomfortable for Arsenal’s manager.
Zubimendi was central to Arsenal’s Premier League title triumph last season, a key cog in the spine of a side that finally got over the line in England. Yet his status has shifted. The £75 million signing of Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United has dramatically altered the landscape in midfield.
Crowded midfield, big risk
Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard, Mikel Merino and Guimaraes are all now jostling for minutes in the centre of the pitch. On paper, it is a dream scenario: depth, variety, competition. In reality, it also creates tough choices. Someone of real stature will miss out.
Even so, letting an experienced World Cup winner walk away after just one season would be a huge gamble for a club defending a title and chasing Europe’s biggest prize. Arsenal know that.
They also know they hold the cards. Zubimendi is tied to a lucrative long-term contract, which removes any sense of financial urgency. There is no need to accept a cut-price fee or bow to pressure late in the window. Arsenal can afford to be stubborn.
Only a monster bid moves the needle
From the Gunners’ perspective, this season is about consolidation at the top and a serious run at the Champions League. Offloading a key squad member simply because the depth chart looks healthier would run directly against that ambition.
So the message to Madrid is simple: if you want him, pay up – heavily.
Los Blancos will have to put forward a massive offer, comfortably above what Arsenal originally invested, to even start a serious conversation. Anything short of that, and the answer is expected to be brief.
For now, Arsenal’s priority is clear: keep Zubimendi, keep the core of a title-winning midfield intact, and force Madrid to decide just how badly they really want him.
