2026 World Cup Round of 32: Updated Knockout Bracket, Schedule, and Fixtures
The 2026 World Cup is underway, and the focus now shifts toward the knockout rounds. Mexico and the United States, both co-hosts, secured their spots early in the Round of 32 by winning their initial matches. More teams will join them as the group stage wraps up, setting the stage for an intense elimination phase.
Each match in the knockout rounds is decisive. Unlike the group stage, where teams play multiple games, the knockout stage offers a single chance—win and advance, lose and your tournament ends.
Current Round of 32 Qualifiers
Besides group winners and runners-up, the 2026 format allows eight third-place teams to advance based on points and goal difference, making the third-place table important. The top eight among these 12 will fill out the Round of 32.
Mexico
With two wins to start the tournament, Mexico secured first place in Group A, guaranteeing their spot in the knockout stage. Their Round of 32 opponent will be a third-place team from Groups C, E, F, H, or I.
United States
The USMNT also clinched their Round of 32 berth by winning Group D, marking their best group-stage finish since 2010. They will face a third-place team from Groups B, E, F, I, or J on July 3.
How the Knockout Bracket Functions
The knockout phase starts with the Round of 32. Each game decides who moves on. No points or draws; every match must produce a winner.
If a match is tied after 90 minutes, it moves to 30 minutes of extra time. If still deadlocked, a penalty shootout decides the victor.
Matchups pair group winners against runners-up or qualifying third-place teams based on pre-set brackets.
Breakdown of Tiebreakers in the Group Stage
If teams finish level on points during the group stage, tiebreakers come into play to determine rankings:
- Goal difference across all group matches
- Total goals scored in the group
- Points earned in head-to-head matches between tied teams
- Goal difference in head-to-head matches
- Goals scored in head-to-head matches
- Team conduct score (penalties and cards received)
- FIFA World Ranking position
Knockout Stage Schedule and Key Matches
The Round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, third-place match, and final follow, each eliminating half the remaining teams until a champion emerges on July 19.
