2026 World Cup Knockout Stage: Updated Round of 16 Matchups and Schedule

The knockout phase of the 2026 World Cup is now underway. The group stage brought a mix of surprises and inspiring stories from underdog teams, yet all the major contenders have advanced.

Teams like France, Spain, Brazil, England, Portugal, and defending champions Argentina are all plotting their route toward the final. Meanwhile, nations such as Cape Verde, DR Congo, and Bosnia & Herzegovina continue to chase memorable moments in their soccer histories.

Round of 32 Highlights

All three host countries reached the knockout rounds. Canada kicked off the Round of 32 with a memorable victory in Los Angeles. Jesse Marsch's team held off South Africa until Stephen Eustaquio scored in stoppage time, securing a 1-0 win.

Brazil faced a challenging match against Japan. Despite trailing early, Brazil leveled through a header before Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli netted a late winner in the 95th minute.

Paraguay shocked many by eliminating Germany in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw, thanks to goalkeeper Orlando Gill’s two penalty saves.

Morocco also triumphed on penalties against the Netherlands, with Issa Diop forcing extra time and Ismael Sabari delivering the decisive spot-kick.

Norway recorded its first-ever knockout win, beating the Ivory Coast 2-1 with a winning goal from Erling Haaland, who has been prolific this season.

France cruised past Sweden 3-0, highlighted by a brace from Kylian Mbappe. They will meet Paraguay next.

Mexico impressed at Azteca Stadium with a 2-0 victory over Colombia, setting up a Round of 16 clash with England.

England came from behind to defeat DR Congo 2-1, courtesy of two second-half goals by Harry Kane.

Belgium staged a remarkable comeback to beat Senegal 3-2 in extra time, overcoming a two-goal deficit late in the match. Belgium now faces the winner of the USA vs. Bosnia & Herzegovina match.

How the Knockout Bracket Works

The Round of 16 marks the second knockout stage. Each match is single elimination; no points or standings matter beyond advancing. If a game ends tied after 90 minutes, it goes to 30 minutes of extra time. If still tied, a penalty shootout decides the winner.

The bracket was set after the group phase, so every team knows the path ahead to the final.

Upcoming Matches and Schedule

The quarterfinals begin on July 9, followed by semifinals on July 12 and 13. The third-place match happens on July 18, with the final scheduled for July 19.
