2026 World Cup Group Stage: Paths to Qualification and Knockout Round Progression
2026 World Cup Group Stage: Which Teams Are Advancing?
As the second round of matches unfolds in the 2026 World Cup group stage, some teams have secured their spots in the knockout rounds while others face elimination. With a new tournament format, many paths remain open heading into the third round of matches.
Previously, the World Cup featured 32 teams split into eight groups of four, with the top two from each group advancing to the Round of 16. This time, 48 teams compete across 12 groups of four. The top two teams from each group plus the eight best third-place teams will advance, creating a Round of 32 knockout bracket. Sixteen teams will be eliminated after the group phase, making qualification scenarios more complex than before.
Below is an update on every group’s current standings and what each team needs to do to move forward or avoid early exit.
Group A Standings and Outlook
Mexico has already qualified as group winner after beating South Korea. South Korea can secure second place by winning or drawing against South Africa. South Africa still has a chance to qualify if they beat Mexico and South Korea loses to Czechia. Czechia can also reach second place with a win over South Korea combined with South Africa drawing or losing to Mexico.
Group B Update
Canada and Switzerland are tied at the top with four points each. Their upcoming match decides first place — Switzerland must win due to Canada's superior goal difference, but Canada advances with a win or draw. Bosnia and Qatar remain mathematically alive for second place but need significant help, especially through goal difference. Their head-to-head match could determine which one has a better shot at qualifying as a third-place team.
Group C Snapshot
Scotland can lock in a knockout berth by defeating Morocco. If Scotland wins and Brazil falls to Haiti, they would top the group. Haiti faces elimination with a loss to Brazil combined with a Morocco win over Scotland. Brazil and Morocco remain in limbo after their draw.
Group D Overview
The United States will top the group if they beat Australia and Turkey fails to overcome Paraguay. Australia can claim first place by defeating the U.S. and seeing Paraguay lose to Turkey. Paraguay gets eliminated with a loss to Turkey and no U.S. defeat. Turkey faces elimination if they lose to Paraguay and the U.S. avoids losing to Australia.
