Advancing to the Knockout Stage

The tournament features 48 teams split into 12 groups. Instead of a round of 16, the knockout phase starts with 32 teams: the top two from each group plus the eight best third-place teams overall.

Tiebreaker Rules

If teams finish level on points in a group, these steps decide the order:

  1. Points earned in matches among tied teams
  2. Goal difference in those matches
  3. Goals scored in those matches

If still tied, further criteria apply:

  1. Goal difference in all group games
  2. Goals scored in all group games
  3. Team conduct score based on yellow/red cards

If equality remains, the latest FIFA World Rankings determine the ranking.

Ranking Third-Place Teams

The eight best third-placed teams are ranked using:

  1. Total points in group matches
  2. Goal difference across all group games
  3. Goals scored in all group games
  4. Team conduct score

If ties persist, FIFA World Rankings settle the order.
