Roma Intensifies Efforts to Sign Mason Greenwood Amid Marseille's Financial Pressure

Mason Greenwood’s renaissance season in France has turned into one of Europe’s most intriguing transfer subplots – and Roma are now pushing hardest to turn his form into a marquee summer signing.

The 24-year-old has just delivered the most productive campaign of his career at Marseille: 26 goals, 11 assists, 45 appearances in all competitions. Those numbers have dragged him from a rebuilding project into the centre of a high-stakes market battle.

Italian outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Roma have intensified their efforts to land the forward, with Greenwood’s father understood to have opened direct lines of communication with the Serie A club over a move to the Stadio Olimpico. This is no casual enquiry. Roma see an opportunity – and a deadline.

Marseille’s financial squeeze

Marseille’s position is clear and uncomfortable. After missing out on Champions League qualification, the Ligue 1 side must raise funds before the end of the financial year on June 30 and are under scrutiny from the DNCG, French football’s financial watchdog.

That pressure has effectively put a price tag on one of their standout performers. Marseille have set an asking price of €50m (£42m/$57m) for Greenwood, a figure designed to ward off lowball offers and reflect his surge in value after a season that earned him a nomination for Ligue 1 Player of the Season.

They do not want to sell cheap. They may not have the luxury of waiting forever.

Roma’s leverage – and the competition

Roma are not bidding in a vacuum. Juventus, Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund have all been linked with Greenwood in recent months, each aware that a 24-year-old forward with elite output and room to grow rarely hits the market at a defined price.

There is also money from the Saudi Pro League hovering in the background. Clubs there are credited with interest, armed with the kind of salaries that can distort any negotiation. Yet Greenwood is understood to favour staying in European football, a stance that immediately sharpens Roma’s chances and those of the other major continental suitors.

Roma do have two important cards in their hand. First, Champions League football. Their qualification for next season’s competition strengthens their pitch both financially and sporting-wise, offering Greenwood a platform at the highest level rather than a step into the unknown.

Second, the relationship between Roma and Marseille is considered strong, a factor that can often accelerate talks or smooth over the rough edges of a complex deal. In a window where time is money for Marseille, that goodwill could matter.

A player in form, a club in flux

On the pitch, Greenwood has done everything a selling club could ask. Goals, creativity, consistency. Off it, he has spoken warmly about his experience in France, even as speculation about his future grows.

“This season has sometimes been difficult collectively, especially in recent months, but individually I think I've had a good season,” he told Foot Mercato. “There are some incredible players in this team of the year, so it's nice to receive this trophy. Ligue 1 is a wonderful league. We play incredible matches, and for me, it's one of the best leagues I've played in. I hope I can stay.”

That final line jars with the financial reality at Marseille. The club would welcome continuity. The balance sheet may demand a sale.

A €50m decision

Everything now circles back to that €50m valuation. Roma appear to be leading the race, but the presence of Juventus, Atletico Madrid, Dortmund and potential Saudi bidders ensures no straightforward path to a signature.

For Marseille, Greenwood’s situation is set to become one of the defining storylines of their summer. They must plug a financial gap before June 30 without dismantling the core of a squad that still needs to compete domestically and in Europe.

For Greenwood, this is the crossroads: stay in a league he clearly enjoys, or turn a breakout season into a major move and the Champions League stage. The numbers are on the table. The interest is real. Now it comes down to who blinks first – the buyers, or a seller racing the clock.
