Orlando Pirates Confirm Deano van Rooyen's Departure

Orlando Pirates have confirmed the departure of defender Deano van Rooyen, drawing a swift line under a short but diligent spell in Soweto.

The club announced on Friday that the 28-year-old full-back is leaving by mutual consent after what were described as “open conversations” about his future and his wish to pursue a new chapter in his career.

“Orlando Pirates Football Club can confirm that Deano van Rooyen will be leaving the club, after the player and the club agreed to part ways by mutual consent. The decision follows open conversations between Deano and the Club, with both sides agreeing that the time is right for him to begin a new chapter in his career.”

Van Rooyen arrived at the Buccaneers from Stellenbosch FC ahead of the 2024/25 season, carrying the reputation of being one of the Betway Premiership’s most reliable full-backs. He slotted straight into the squad and, whether handed a starting role or asked to make an impact from the bench, he rarely dipped below the standard expected.

Inside the club, he was viewed as a model professional. Pirates underlined that point, highlighting the consistency of his contribution and his attitude around the dressing room. Across his time in black and white, he clocked up more than 50 appearances, a solid return for a player who had only recently made the step up to one of the country’s most demanding environments.

The decision to part ways still lands as a jolt for many supporters, not least because Van Rooyen offered exactly what coaches crave from a modern full-back: reliability, discipline, and a willingness to do the unglamorous work on either flank.

Now, with his chapter at Pirates officially closed, the question shifts to where one of the league’s steady full-backs will surface next – and how the Buccaneers plan to fill the void he leaves behind.
