Manchester United's Midfield Rebuild: Ederson from Atalanta

Manchester United’s summer rebuild is starting in the engine room – and it may begin with a name that won’t dominate the headlines but could reshape the way they play.

Club officials are working on a deal to bring Ederson from Atalanta, with talks progressing to the point where the Brazilian is being lined up as potentially the first signing of the transfer window, according to the Manchester Evening News.

Ederson, 26, is not the kind of marquee arrival that sends shirt sales soaring. He is, however, the kind of midfielder United have lacked for years: relentless, robust, and happy to do the ugly work. In Italy he has built a reputation for his running power and physical edge, operating either as a deep-lying midfielder or as a No. 8 who can surge from box to box.

His contract in Bergamo runs down in 12 months and he is expected to leave Atalanta this summer. United’s sustained interest, stretching back to last year, underlines how highly he is rated inside the club’s revamped football department, with Jason Wilcox understood to be a clear admirer of the Brazilian’s profile.

The pressure to reshape the midfield has been building. Casemiro is edging towards the exit and United have accepted that a new core is needed if they are to drag themselves back into serious contention at the top of the Premier League. Ederson is viewed as part of that solution, not the whole answer.

Crucially, any deal for him is not expected to change the club’s plan to land a marquee midfielder to replace Casemiro. Senior figures have ring-fenced significant funds for that role and remain intent on making a statement addition at the heart of the side.

Ederson, then, would be the workhorse around whom the glamour can function.

United’s shortlist for that bigger-name signing is already taking shape. Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson is reported to sit near the top of their midfield targets, though United are unwilling to be dragged into a bidding war with Manchester City for the 21-year-old.

At the very top of the dream list sits Aurélien Tchouaméni. The Real Madrid midfielder is “seen as a dream midfield signing at Old Trafford”, but that is exactly what it sounds like for now – a dream. Real Madrid have shown no inclination to even discuss his departure, and prising an established player from the European champions has rarely been a straightforward task for anyone.

So United are working across several tracks. Alongside Ederson and Anderson, they are also monitoring Mateus Fernandes. With West Ham relegated to the Championship, the expectation is that a deal for the Portuguese midfielder would be relatively uncomplicated compared to the elite-level pursuits elsewhere.

One thing is clear: United do not intend to stop at a single midfield arrival. The plan is for at least two new faces in the centre of the pitch, with Ederson positioned as an early piece of business that adds legs, aggression, and tactical flexibility.

If the Atalanta man does become the first signing of the summer, he will also go down as the first addition of the Michael Carrick era. For a former midfielder who built his career on balance and control, starting his tenure with a player known for tireless running and physicality feels like a deliberate statement.

United want their midfield to look and feel different next season. Ederson may not be the headline act, but he could be the one who changes the tempo.
