Ferland Mendy Undergoes Surgery for Thigh Injury
Ferland Mendy has taken the surgical route in a bid to save both his season and the final stretch of his top-level career.
The Real Madrid left-back underwent an operation on his troublesome right thigh in Lyon on Monday, a procedure prompted by a recurring injury that has dogged him all year. A medical source indicated the surgery “went well,” with an initial recovery window of three to four months.
That timeline will come as a relief in Madrid and in France. There had been genuine concern that the 30-year-old could face up to a year on the sidelines, such was the severity and persistence of the problem. At one stage, the issue was viewed as potentially career-threatening.
The injury flared again during a La Liga match on May 3, the latest in a grim sequence. This is Mendy’s fifth injury of the season, a campaign that has repeatedly stalled just as he has tried to build rhythm and continuity.
His path to the top has never been straightforward. A product of the Paris Saint-Germain youth system, Mendy rebuilt his career at Le Havre, then rose sharply at Lyon before earning his move to Real Madrid. That climb took him into the France national team, where he collected 10 caps between 2018 and 2024.
Now he faces another climb, this time from the treatment room. The operation offers hope. The next three to four months will decide how much of the old Ferland Mendy the football world will see again.
