For that scenario to unfold, the first crack would have to appear at the Etihad. Manchester City face Crystal Palace at home on Wednesday 13 May, and any slip there changes the landscape. A draw would leave City four points behind. A defeat would push the gap to five.

That is where the pressure really bites.

If City do drop points against Palace, Arsenal’s meeting with Burnley becomes more than just another home fixture. Win it, and the arithmetic turns brutal for the champions. Victory would take Arsenal at least seven points clear, with City able to collect a maximum of only six from their remaining matches.
